Suffolk Show, Slaughden boats

Slaughden, Aldeburgh

One of my paintings that i am exhibiting at this years Suffolk Show. The Suffolk Show is on Wednesday 31st and Thursday 1st, I will be at the show on the Thursday where I will be doing a painting demonstration in the Art tent so please do come and see me if you are there.

This painting is of the Slaughden Estuary at Aldeburgh with a low tide and a boat stranded on the mud and others further out in the water. In the distance is the Martello tower in the hazy light.

Martello Tower Aldeburgh

After about half an hour I realised that today’s choice of location was not too smart with a stiff wind straight of the sea. However I walked all round the Martello towers and on the far side it far more sheltered and felt much warmer. But I couldn’t find a better view and I wanted to include the sea, it is just the way it happens. Built between 1808 and 1812 it is the most northerly tower and also the largest.

Aldeburgh beach

A really pleasant day on Aldeburgh beach with one of the inshore wooden boats IH38 that sits outside the White lion. Nice to chat to so many people who came to see me whilst I painted having recognised me after the Look East article during the week.

Day 282, of my 2016 sketch a day challenge

South Lookout Tower, Aldeburgh

Sitting on the beach one of two lookout towers. A Grade II listed square 3 story building built in the 1830’s as a lookout tower for ships in distress.

The small room at the top, accessed via the spiral staircase gives wonderful views across the North sea through the large East facing window. A hit and miss day with lots of rain showers which thankfully just kept at bay long enough for this sketch.
